Damage In Four Prefectures

Hi... Okay... I've found out some information on damage and loss of life after the earthquake and subsequent tsunami. The data below lists towns and sections of that particular town that were heavily damaged, very heavily damaged or completely destroyed.

While the number of confirmed dead is rising as of today... the information I have for you below is from March 12, 2011 - the day after this trouble began. It's not exact, as you'll see - but it will give you pause.

The totally destroyed cities in Miyagi-ken (which is where Sendai is) have been decimated by the tsunami. I have added - where possible - detailed maps of the afflicted towns. Two areas of my old town of Ohtawara-shi in Tochigi-ken have some heavy damage.

Totally destroyed Areas:
Miyagi-ken (Miyagi Prefecture):

Heavily damaged areas:
Miyagi-ken (Miyagi Prefecture) :
Lots of damage:
Miyagi-ken (Miyagi Prefecture) :

Fukushima-Ken (Fukushima Prefecture):

 Ibaraki-ken (Ibaraki Prefecture):

Tochigi-ken (Tochigi Prefecture):

Somewhere realizing this only data is from March 12, 2011,
Andrew Joseph

PS: I'll see if I can dig up something more recent - still, just know that Ohtawara-shi is maybe 100 kilometres away from where the tsunami hit... and the fact that parts of the city are severely damaged... well, that earthquake that was a 9.0 off Senadi... it hit Ohtawara at a force stronger than the 6.3 quake that demolished Christchurch, New Zealand. I saw on a ticker below a Japanese news real that as of Wednesday, four people died in Tochigi-ken. It could have been the earthquake causing damage, or heart attacks or something else.
